I made this at home today with my little ones. The first time did not go so well….

But the second time was a success!!!
This density experiment is easy to do at home or at school!
First, get your supplies. All you need are 6 clear cups, 1 large cup, sugar, food coloring, a spoon, a microwave, and an eye-dropper or plastic syringe.
Then you distribute your sugar, water (1/2 cup each), and food coloring. No sugar in the first cup. 1 scoop in the second cup. 2 scoops in the third cup. 3 scoops in the fourth…. and so on. The more sugar, the denser the water.
Then mix.
After that, put in the microwave for about 1-2 minutes. Mix some more. This will help the sugar dissolve.
Finally, you can start putting in your colorful, sugar water. Start with the most dense (purple) and work your way up! Now this is where we messed up the first time. We used a turkey baster so the water came out too fast. The second time we used an eye-dropper. It was a slower process, but it turned out much better!
Isn't it beautiful? We hope that this rainbow in a jar will help the Leprechaun find his way to our house the year!
